Dear Mum and Dad,

I’m afraid we’re in a bit of trouble. When we left school today we were chased by the police. The Pitbull must be behind it, because he’s trying to stop a protest against Dragon World which, as you’ve probably already guessed, we’re a part of.

We have to stay out of sight until Saturday – when Dragon World opens – or we’ll be arrested.

Flynn stopped writing and looked at Paddy and Briar. “Should we let them know we’re hoping to actually stop Dragon World somehow?”

“Um… perhaps it’s best we leave that part out,” said Briar. “It’ll only worry them more. Just tell them we’ll be safe and we’ll keep in contact when we can. Tell them I’ll deliver myself to The Pitbull on Saturday.”

Flynn nodded, and continued writing. When he’d finished, he rolled up the note in a tight scroll and fixed it to Lightning’s leg. Lightning had hopped onto Briar’s shoulder, so she crept back along the road until she was in sight of the house.

“Wait!”

Briar turned to see Flynn running swiftly up behind her. He whispered urgently.

“I’ve had a thought. The last time we came to the city, before we met you, we were given a lift by a man named Kelly, and he was really nice. He’d been surfing at the beach we washed up on, and he bought us something to eat, and drove us into the city. He told us to let him know if we ever needed any help, so maybe he’ll let us stay with him for the next two days. We still have his phone number, but it’s inside, in Paddy’s treasure box. Perhaps Mum and Dad could send Lightning back to us with it.”

Briar nodded. She took the note from Lightning’s leg and Flynn scribbled his message on the bottom before re-attaching it to the falcon.

“OK.” Flynn nodded.

“Home!” Briar commanded, flicking the falcon up into the air. Lightning took off like an arrow, silently speeding through the night in the direction of the house. Briar tried to keep an eye on him, but it was difficult in the darkness.

In seconds Lightning appeared again, picked out by the porch light, and Briar saw him come in to land. Then he began hopping towards the door.

The man came out of the darkness with the speed of a striking snake. He dived across the porch and grabbed Lightning in his outstretched hand.

“Oh no!” Briar gasped, completely forgetting that she was hiding. Flynn grabbed her arm. As they watched, the man backed carefully away from the porch, holding the bird tightly. Briar then watched him inspect the falcon. Lightning made no sound; he didn’t even move, and she feared that he’d been hurt, crushed by the oaf’s powerful hand! The man spotted the note, and took it from the bird’s leg. He unrolled it, and held it up to read it in the dim light.

Lightning chose that moment to rouse himself.

He pecked the man’s hand so viciously that he yelped loudly and loosened his grip.
